Catalog Description

The Health Information Technology Assistant Certificate of Achievement prepares students for entry-level positions in the field of health information management. This program is designed to provide students with basic technical skills in health record management, release of information, computer applications, HIPAA, health law pertaining to health information, and more, as well as develop critical thinking skills. Those obtaining a Health Information Technology Assistant Certificate of Achievement can be employed in a variety of healthcare settings from physician offices to hospitals. Opportunities for employment include scanning of documents/medical records, filing and retrieving records, release of information and reception activities, medical record management, medical record assembly, medical record analysis and completion, collecting and abstracting health data for statistical purposes, etc. Students must complete the required courses listed for the Health Information Technology Assistant Certificate of Achievement. Upon completion of the required courses with at least a “C” or “P” (pass) grade in each course, the student will be awarded a Job Skills Certificate. 1. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to demonstrate competency in the measurement, analysis, and interpretation of health data and health law.

2. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to apply the knowledge and technical skills required for successful HIM entry-level employment as a health information professional in various healthcare settings

3. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to successfully utilize computer applications necessary for entry-level HIM employment as a health information professional.

4. Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to exhibit the behavioral, interpersonal, ethical and professional skills for entry-level employment in Health Information Management as a health information professional in various healthcare settings.

Enrollment Completer Projections

The current faculty and facilities allow for the program to enroll up to 30 students per semester, with a planned student completion in 1 semester or more. This schedule would allow the program to have approximately 60 completers per year.

Program Goal

Upon successful completion of this program, the student will be able to:

The mission of the Bakersfield College Health Information Technology Assistant Certificate of Achievement Program is in alignment with the College mission by providing students from diverse economic, cultural, and educational backgrounds with progressive, comprehensive, and high-quality courses needed to help students obtain basic technical skills required for entry-level employment in health information, prepare students for an impactful future in health information, assure academic and personal growth, and promote life-long learning and the pursuit of advanced learning opportunities.
