CNC Machinist, Certificate of Achievement (COA)

The Advanced Manufacturing program offers the opportunity for students to excel by providing the latest information and technology in both lecture and laboratory settings. The Advanced Manufacturing program has included the most modern software and hardware to provide a good environment for learning. The inclusion of multi-axis machining, new computer-controlled laser technology, and continuing use of general manufacturing process technology gives the students access to industrial tools and technologies found in the industry. Courses are aligned with industry skills and national standards to prepare students interested in working toward the completion of an associate degree, certificate of achievement in CNC Machine Operator and/or Manufacturing Applications, transfer classes for university credit, and general interest; and to provide incumbent workers with skills improvement for advancement in the local industry.  

The Advanced Manufacturing program has two stackable certificates and a degree to provide students with multiple career pathway opportunities.  Students can earn the CNC Machine Operator COA in one semester.  Students can complete the next stackable certificate, the CNC Machinist COA, in one semester following completion of the CNC Machine Operator COA.  

The CNC Machinist, Certificate of Achievement is a new award. Data from the local Proficiency Award are as follows:

The Manufacturing Technology program did not have state-approved certificates of achievement or an associate degree. As such, students could not select Manufacturing Technology as a major and no completion data has been provided. Course success rates in manufacturing courses have consistently been above the average college success rate, with rates above 80% for the past four academic years.

The CNC Machinist, COA will train students in common skill sets required of entry-level CNC machine operators, machinists, and or quality control inspectors.

Successful completion of the program will provide the student with the ability to demonstrate the following competencies:

• Apply knowledge of safety principles, applied mathematics and cutting tool assembly in a manufacturing environment.

• Analyze and understand engineering documentation.

• Perform GD&T (geometric dimensioning and tolerancing) for manufacturing and inspection in a timely manner and to industry standards.

• Properly navigate and set up a Haas CNC control and CNC machine in a timely manner and to industry standards.

The Certificate of Achievement in CNC Machining is designed to prepare students for employment as entry-level CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machinists; prepare transfer students with relevant hands-on skills; and help local industry advance by offering continuing education for incumbent employees.  The certificate outline was created in conjunction with our local industry partners.  This certificate addresses current skills and competencies needed in our region as well as nationally.  The manufacturing sector is the largest export sector in Ventura County, producing over $14.6 billion in export goods in 2017.  It is critical to the manufacturing community of Ventura County—and throughout the State of California—to have ready and available access to a skilled workforce who are prepared for the rapidly changing production technologies of the 21st century.
