Program Goal

The goal of the program is occupational. Many jobs in the film post-production industry seek applicants who are able to demonstrate basic post-production skills and knowledge. Students who would like to prepare for careers in the film post-production industry, but are not pursuing a degree, will be able instead to earn a certificate of achievement. The certificate will demonstrate they have had abroad introduction to film-post production, including video editing, sound editing, and motion graphics. This certificate demonstrates that students have studied these skills, including producing work samples for an online portfolio. For students looking to re-skill in the film post-production area, the advantage of this certificate is they can achieve it in as little as two semesters of focused work that gives them a broad range of skills in video, graphics and sound post-production.

Program Requirements Narrative

The proposed certificate of achievement meets the mission of DVC by adding a new opportunity for career education for students who wish to go into the film post-production industry. This fits with the mission of California Community Colleges by contributing to continuous workforce improvement.

DVC currently offers an AA and AS-T in Television Arts as well as a Certificate of Achievement in Television Studio and Certificates of Accomplishment in Film Production, TV Studio, and Writing for the Digital Medium. This new certificate would be DVC’s first certificate to focus on post-production. There are four colleges offer degrees and certificates with the Film Production TOP codes, which are graduating a total of 148 students annually. The workforce data report indicated an annual undersupply of 175 students in the Bay Region for Film and Video editors. Since there were no new courses developed for this certificate, there should be no adverse impacts to other programs in the region. This new certificate merely adds an option for DVC students.
