Program Goal

Information Technology provides a solid foundation in the field of computing and data processing. The degree prepares students for entry level positions as programmers, computer user support specialists, Web development specialists, database managers. Students also gain competence in spreadsheets and presentation graphics.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Information Technology program contains a series of courses to develop students skills and knowledge that will prepare them to analyze and solve business and organizational problems with technology. 

During their first year students will learn introductory concepts of computer operation and applications, databases and programming. They will also acquire knowledge and skills related to Internet technology.

The second year provides students the opportunity to add skills in data modeling, networking and Web programming.

Once they have completed the program they will have gained a solid foundation in information technology as well as focused skills in one or more areas of computer technology.

Palomar College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with developing a new program or a program modification because 1) the occupations’ entry-level and median earnings are above the living wage and 2) a supply gap exists. The region should note that employers typically require a bachelor’s degree as the minimum requirement for computer programmers.
