Business Information Worker II (BIW II) Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students for mid-level office and administrative support in a variety of job positions, including office and executive administrative support, office supervision, small business support, retail sales, and customer service representatives. The BIW II Certificate of Achievement builds on the BIW I foundation and provides students with additional skills in PowerPoint, Excel, Access, QuickBooks, records management, and customer relations. Students completing this stage of the BIW pathway will be equipped to take multiple Microsoft Office Specialist credential exams.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Currently,the CAOT department offers five Certificates of Achievement. We are in theprocess of including; the Business Information Worker I Certificate. Thisadditional certificate will enable students to continue with the BIW Pathway indeveloping their job-skills that will lead from an entry-level tointermediate-level employment. It is expected that all the core courses would beoffered annually. At least one section of each of the major requirements areprojected to be offered every semester with an enrollment at approximately 35students in each section. Recruitment will be conducted within the existingCAOT students’ populations, along with a strong marketing strategy, andwork-based partnerships, it is estimated that by the second year, 5-10 studentswill complete the Business Information Worker II Certificate of Achievement. Asthe BIW II program becomes more familiar, the number certificate completerswill increase to 15-20 by year five.

The Business Information Worker II (BIW II )Certificate of Achievement builds on the BIW I foundation and provides studentswith additional skills in PowerPoint, Excel, Access, QuickBooks, recordsmanagement, relations. This secondary stage in the BIW pathway increasesstudents’ value and opportunities in multiple occupations, including but notlimited to: office and executive administrative support, officesupervision/coordination, small business support, retail sales, and customerservice. Students completing this stage of the BIW pathway will be equipped totake multiple Microsoft Office Specialist credential exams and become aQuickBooks certified user. The Business Information Worker II pathway is astatewide pathway designed with faculty and industry involvement to preparestudents for in-demand jobs, and to inform business of the rich capabilitiesthat exist at every California Community College Campus. On occasion one or twonew courses need to be developed by a college to align with the pathway. However,because the pathway utilizes existing academic programs and courses, often nonew curriculum is required. In addition, the pathway represents a set ofin-demand skills throughout the state, based upon interviews with placementagencies, and cross-referenced with advisory groups and other Labor MarketInformation. The program has a clear sequence of courses that leads to intended outcomes and gainful employment and as such is appropriate to the objectives and conditions of higher education and community college education in California.
