Catalog Description
The Interior Architecture & Design Certificate offers design education that combines studio courses with the study of design theory, presentation skills and resources.
Students are prepared to formulate and demonstrate a basic understanding of interior design concepts. Students are also prepared to analyze a client’s needs, goals, and requirements to prepare an interior design solution of a space or structure. Students will be trained in the fields of physical and digital model-building, lighting design, freehand sketching, computer aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM) software programs, and client/vendor communication, and design development.
Students are also prepared to transfer to baccalaureate degree programs in interior architecture & design. Common occupations for this certificate include drafter/designer in an architecture office, interior design project developer, interior design consultant, staging designer for movie production/residential and commercial projects, and furniture designer.
Instruction methods include slide illustrated lectures, field trips, construction site visits, discussions with industry professionals, and guest lecturers. Students will simulate the client interview process. Critiques and presentations will help students to develop an awareness of the basic principles of design and aesthetics.
Student Learning Outcomes
After earning the certificate students will:
- Create, propose, and carry out design solutions relevant to the needs of clients and the environment.
- Develop and present final design project through appropriate presentation media and to connect verbal and visual presentation techniques for presentations of interior projects.
- Prepare working drawings and specifications for non-load-bearing interior construction, reflected ceiling plan, lighting, color, interior detailing, materials, finishes, space planning, fixtures, and equipment with guidelines and all applicable codes.
- Analyze client’s needs, goals, and life safety requirements.
- Prepare for entry into the Interior Design profession.
- Develop the skills to be a creative designer.
- Formulate and demonstrate preliminary design concepts that are aesthetic, appropriate, and functional, and in accordance with current codes and standards.
The projected number of students that will complete the certificate/degree annually will be approximately 8 students.

The Interior Architecture & Design certificate will give students the opportunity to enter into the workforce as an intern or entry level drafter and/or designer in the field of interior design.

Course Report
The Interior Architecture & Design Certificate is designed to provide students the necessary skills to serve as a drafter and/or designer in the interior design field. Students will have the skills to design, document, and implement a design solution for interior architecture projects such as a redesign of an existing space, improvements, room additions, etc. Current design techniques, sketching, design software, building construction, and other areas are covered.
