Catalog Description

The BRW (Business Remote Worker) – Certificate of Achievement prepares students to develop dynamic skills to provide office support for employers from their own home. This allowing them the flexibility to attend personal matters that otherwise would be more time limiting. It also prepares students to efficiently transition from office to home in case of an emergency and do it abiding to regulations and etiquette.

Enrollment Completer Projections

This certificate prepares students for employment in office support from a more convenient remote location. As stated in our college catalog and online, College of the Desert’s programs and services contribute to the success, learning and achievement of our diverse students, and the vitality of the Desert Community College District, surrounding areas, and beyond. The program results in a versatile logistics setting that allows the student to maintain residence in the Coachella Valley and work from home if desired. In this manner, student can be employed without having to extend any required accommodations nor travel outside the Coachella Valley if they desire. The business skills allow the student to combine their knowledge of office support with the proper use of technology for remote etiquette.

The course content will be offered in short-term, affordable completion pathways and is designed both for entry-level workforce and career advancement. In combination with the core courses of the Business Information Worker (BIW) specialty certifications at College of the Desert, it will allow the student to earn a dual certification that offers flexibility, specialization, and the possibility of the opportunity to move further into that field.

Expected completion for the first two years will be about 60 students per year. Then we expect an increase in demand due to promotion and popularity.

Program Goal

The BRW - Business Remote Worker Certificate of Achievement provides our students with current and relevant skills that are not limited by any geographical location. The student can use their new skills to work either as a contractor or an employee for any local business or even as a part of a bigger enterprise anywhere in the country, yet they are still able to maintain their residence in the Coachella Valley. The idea is to prepare students with practical, career-oriented skills in order to have active employment they can do virtually from their own home. The shape of business is rapidly changing. There has been a need for people to perform their duties from home like those with children, sick or elder relatives, etc. They are available to work without having to stay on top of their personal commitments. Also, events, like the Covid-19 pandemic, has forced many employers to have their employees move operations to their own living rooms without giving them much time for the transition. The strategies in the office environment  are very specialized and focused on satisfying client demand.  Clients vary in the same way as their policies and regulations. Government agency clients, for example, will have higher accessibility standards. Higher end clients will require more professional, virtual settings. Clients with proprietary information may require a more secure handling of information.

The BRW – Business Remote Worker Certificate of achievement, will allow students to demonstrate computer literacy with respect to computer hardware and software applications, apply standard rules of business conduct and customer service, online accounting, and use specialized software and databases. Most important the student will be prepared to do it from home or transition from the office to home efficiently.
