Catalog Description

This certificate includes a selection of courses that provide academic preparation to individuals who are seeking employment, or are currently employed, in public relations.

Enrollment Completer Projections

This program was complete overhauled. We had few completers in the old program because a discipline within the program was not offering the courses necessary to complete the program. The new program includes classes that will help students develop important skills for the industry.

We hope that between 10-15 students will complete in the first two years. We are working with CSUSM to encourage its Communication majors to consider the certificate because it would provide courses and training that CSUSM does not offer. This will also increase the number of completions.

Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

The public relations certificate was designed to be completed in one year. All of the classes are available online and some are available face-to-face for students who are interested in the classroom experience. Students are first introduced to the public relations and journalism industries. Next students are introduced to social media and multimedia. Finally, students take an advanced public relations course, advertising or marketing, and participate in an internship to practice their skills. Students who complete the program leave with an understanding of the public relations profession as well as writing, social media, multimedia and advertising/marketing skills. Students can use these skills to work as a public relations technician for small/medium sized businesses. For more opportunities, students can combine this certificate with a bachelor’s degree in communication, business, and journalism

Per labor market information, SWC recommends a name change prior to approval

As there are no new classes being developed and simply a repackaging of classes into a certificates, San Diego Mesa supports.

LMI does not support maybe consider changing the title. Says complete overhaul so the program is not a modification.

Since, per Nichol, this is a program modification MiraCosta approves, however, I believe we all should take note of the COE recommendation and not consider starting like programs at our institutions given the minimum of a bachelor's degree required to earn a below state average living wage. This COE information will be very helpful should faculty at my institution inquire about offering a like program. I am actually considering sending monthly updates to MiraCosta faculty that summarizes these COE recommendations so that they can see our work and to provide context on what they should and should not pursue based on LMI that is our sole criteria for approval.

While most entry-level and median earnings for these occupations are above the living wage and a supply gap exists for these positions, the available LMI recommends proceeding with caution when developing a program because 1) employers require, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree for these occupations and 2) the percentage of students who obtained a job related to their field of study and earned a living wage after completing related programs is below the state average for students who complete Career Education programs in general.

While this program is technically a new certificate, this is really more of a program modification. The are modifying the program from a Certificate of Proficiency to a Certificate of Achievement. No new curriculum was created. This is a stackable certificate and all of the classes are required for other certificates and/or degrees. Additionally, when looking at the LMI report, the public relations specialist was the most positive of all of the occupations in this group. It had the most job growth since 2014 and jobs are accepted to grow by 2024.
