Catalog Description

This program prepares students for the Limited Scope of Practice in Radiography Examination, which encompasses skills associated with the Radiation Protection Core, Digital Authorization, and imaging the chest, extremities, torso-skeletal, skull, and leg-podiatric. This program also prepares students for employment as practicing medical imaging professionals in urgent care centers, imaging centers, medical clinics and/or private offices. Students are recommended to have a strong command of the written and verbal English language.

Application & Preparedness Overview

Program Application Procedure:

Attend one of the monthly Limited Permit X-Ray Technician (LPXT) program information sessions. Information Sessions are available from September to June (except January). Please contact the Allied Health Office, LPXTP director, Allied Health Coordinator, or the counseling office for times, days, and location.

Submit proof of valid certificate/license from one of the following Allied Heath or Nursing professions:

National or California State Medical Assisting Certificate

BVNPT California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN)

Registered Nurse (RN)

National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) certified orthopedic technologist (OTC)

Apply for admission to the college through the Admissions Office (applications are available online at http://www.lbcc.edu/admissions.)

Complete the LPXT application form and bring the completed application form and documentation to the School of Allied Health, Room C100.

Selection Process.  

The following process is conducted each March in preparation for the Fall semester:  

The date of LPXT program application will determine placement on the LPXT program waitlist

Applications received by March 1st will be eligible for selection into the fall semester of that same year.  Applications received after March 2nd will be eligible for selection the fall semester of the following year.

LBCC Medical Assisting Program graduates have priority placement and selection into the LPXT Program.

United States Veterans, who satisfy the LPXT program admission requirements, are also given priority placement and selection.

Class size is based on available clinical placements at various affiliated clinical sites.

Provisionally accepted students must attend the mandatory LPXT program advisory meeting in the Summer Session prior to the fall semester.

Prior to starting the clinical rotation of the LPXT program, students will need to complete the following:  

Complete a physical health form and physical and emotion fitness examination,

Clear a current background check,

Earn the American Health Association Basic Life Support CPR card,

Be up to date on vaccinations, flu shots, TB tests, drug tests, and

Secure malpractice insurance.

Accreditation.

Long Beach City College is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The LBCC limited permit x-ray technician program is approved by the California Department of Health – Radiological Health Branch (CDPH-RHB). 

Enrollment Completer Projections

The department expects 50 students to complete each year. Statewide data from the Chancellor’s Office report that completions for this or similar program are 679 annually.

Program Goal

Completion of the LBCC LPXT Program and award of the LBCC Certificate of Achievement for Limited Permit X-ray Technician qualifies the student to take the State of California - Limited Scope of Practice in Radiography Examination (XT). The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) on behalf of CDPH-RHB administers the Limited Scope of Practice in Radiography Examination. Completion of the LBCC LPXT Program includes CDPH-RHB XT certificate exam eligibility in Radiation Protection Core, Digital Authorization, Chest, Extremities, Torso-skeletal, Skull, and leg-podiatric.

This program also provides the opportunity for medical professional to gain skills and certification for potential employment as a limited x-ray technician if they hold a current and valid certificate/license from one of the following Allied Health or Nursing professions: National or California State Medical Assisting Certificate, BVNPT California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Registered Nurse (RN), or NBCOT certified OTC orthopedic technologist.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, demand for Medical Assistants (M.A.) is expected to increase at a much faster than average rate of employment growth.   M.A.’s with the additional license to perform radiographic procedures on patients are in higher demand and are more highly paid, due to the expanding nature of outpatient medical facilities as well as Doctors’ offices utilizing x-ray for non-critical imaging.

The overarching goal is to prepare students for employment as practicing medical imaging professionals in urgent care centers, imaging centers, medical clinics and/or private offices. The California Limited Permit X-ray Technician (XT) certificate usually is acquired as a stackable certificate in conjunction with another certificate such as a Medical Assisting Certificate.
