Program Goal

The Law Enforcement Career Preparation Certificate ofAchievement Program supports the mission Napa Valley College to provide“open-access” to certificate programs that prepare students for entry to theworkforce.  The courses in the programconnect to each of the institutional learning outcomes and contribute a student’sability to develop and strengthen skills related to communication andcollaboration, critical thinking, information competency, civil responsibility, and personal responsibility.

This program connects directly with the local lawenforcement workforce including cadet, explorer, and other related youthprograms designed to prepare future applicants by providing real-life,on-the-job work experience. There is currently an unprecedented number of jobvacancies that local law enforcement agencies are having difficulty filling. This program supports a “grow your own” approach by partnering with local lawenforcement agencies, area high schools, and the college to provide educationand experience to increase the number and qualification of job applicants.  This program was specifically requested byour advisory committee and is supported by Barbara Nemko, superintendent ofNapa County schools.

This certificate program uses existing courses with theAdministration of Justice program.  Nonew courses, resources, facilities, or instructors are required to offer it.Local law enforcement agencies will use their existing youth programs in orderto provide the internships required. Participants will earn college creditwhile gaining experience in a youth program. Administration of Justice classesare already being offered on campus at two area high schools and continue to bepopular with students. All of the classes are also already available online sostudents can access them regardless of which high school they attend.

The only potential financial impact on thecollege would be providing additional sections of the required classes in orderto accommodate student demand.
