The Certificate of Achievement in Commercial Music: Piano Teaching Fundamentals is a fully online CTE certificate with a focus on piano pedagogy and basic business skills for current or prospective piano teachers who wish to hone their teaching methods and gain a solid business background so they may succeed in the industry.

Additional LMI information: In 2017, a survey of music stores and independent music schools which employ piano teachers in the surrounding areas was created and distributed. We are confident that there is a high demand for piano teachers and for a program like this. Out of 12 employers, 10 stated that they anticipate employing additional piano teachers in the next year. Salary ranges of surveyed employers averaged $46.50/hour, and most teachers employed teach between 10-20 students. 11 of the 12 responses indicated that there is an insufficient pool of qualified candidates, indicating that the demand for Piano Teaching programs in strong. Staff are in the process of performing another industry survey which closes 11/22/19.

No other piano pedagogy program exists in our service area, or for that matter in Northern California in general. Support among our colleagues is strong. Chabot College; Music; Tim Harris / Eric Schultz; They don’t have the program, but they are excited that we offer it. They see the need. They fully support our going forward with the planned curriculum. Ohlone College; Music/Commercial Music; Jim McManus; They offer a certificate in Commercial Music but not Teaching Piano. He wishes us well and isn’t sure how his certificate would be impacted by ours. Los Medanos College; Music Technology; Kyle Chuah; They support us going forward with our planned curriculum. They don’t have a pedagogy program.
