Catalog Description

The associate in science degree in child development is designed to prepare students to work with young children in various early care and education settings.  Upon completion of the A.S. degree, a student possesses the course work required to work as a teacher in Title 5 & Title 22 early care and education settings.  Students are eligible to apply for the California Child Development Teacher Permit through the California Commission of Teacher Credentialing, meeting Title 5 program requirements.

Program Learning Outcomes

1.     Integrate understanding of the needs, the characteristics,  and multiple influences on development of all children birth to age eight as related to high quality care  and education of young children.

2.     Analyze, demonstrate, and evaluate effective practice in working with young children.

3.     Design, implement, and evaluate environments and activities that support positive developmental play and learning outcomes for all youngchildren.

4.     Apply effective guidance and interaction strategies that support all children’s social learning, identity, and self-confidence.

5.     Apply ethical standards and professional behaviors that demonstrate understanding and knowledge, deepening the commitment to Early Care and Education profession.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Currently, the child development program has a success rate of 83% and a retention rate of 96%. This particular certificate is aligned with our degrees, encompassing the core eight courses. The number of degrees awarded each year continues to increase, so we anticipate awarding approximately 70 students with this degree.

Program Goal

Upon completion of the A.S. degree, a student possesses the course work required to work as a teacher in Title 5 & Title 22 early care and education settings.

 

Students are eligible to apply for the California Child Development Teacher Permit through the California Commission of Teacher Credentialing, meeting Title 5 program requirements.

 

Students who currently work in the field may be eligible to apply for the California Child Development Permit through the Commission of Teacher Credentialing for either the Master Teacher or Site Supervisor Permit meeting Title 5 program requirements.
