Thisprogram is intended to provide an educated and trained recruit base for theSolano County and regional fire service departments. Upon completion of thisprogram, the student will earn a Certificate of Achievement for the SolanoCommunity College Fire Academy, a SFM FF1 Certificate, and an EMT Certificate. Uponsuccessfully achieving the SCC FF1 Academy Certificate, the student would beeligible to apply to fire service agencies nation-wide.
Note – Fire50 and 101 are prerequisites for Fire 140 - Fire Academy.

The Firefighter 1 Academy Certificate is designed to meetthe training and educational requirements established by the California StateFire Marshal’s Office (SFM) and California State Fire Training (SFT) forFirefighter 1 (FF1) certification and potential job employment as aprofessional firefighter. After the completion of this certificate, a SolanoCommunity College student has the basic qualifications to apply for a job as aprofessional firefighter.
Solano Community College recognizes that the majority of ourstudents entering into the Fire Technology program is focused upon gainingemployment as a firefighter first, and then perhaps returning to obtain theirAssociates of Science Degree. All Fire Technology instructors encourage allstudents to consider focusing on achieving their AS Degree and beyond, but seefirsthand the students wanting to achieve the minimum requirements to becominga firefighter.
Solano Community College existence is to meet all students’needs in the pursuit of the upper education and our CTE Program meeting theneeds of all students gaining employment into the CTE field of their choice.With this in mind, the Fire Technology Program recognizes the importance ofguiding all students toward the goal of becoming a firefighter and providesthem this certificate for such guidance.
The objectives of the certificate are to provide the studentan introduction into the fire service (Fire 050), its history, terminology,equipment, the many roles of fire service personnel, and career opportunitiesavailable. Our Fire 101 course introduces the student to the basic principlesand history related to the firefighter safety initiatives, focusing on the needfor cultural change and behavioral change throughout emergency services.
The EMT 128 course provides basic first-aid training andCPR. This course as well as Fire 050 and 101 are prerequisites to Fire 140;Firefighter 1 Academy. This course provides theskills and knowledge needed for the entry level professional firefighter toperform his/her duties safely, effectively, and competently.
The curriculum is based onthe 2019 edition of NFPA 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter ProfessionalQualifications, the 2016 edition of NFPA 1051 Standard for Wildland FireFighter Professional Qualifications, and the 2017 edition of NFPA 1072 Standardfor Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass DestructionIncidents.
The seven overarching themesof the California State Fire Fighter I curriculum are: general knowledgegermane to the profession, fire department communications, fire groundoperations, rescue operations, preparedness and maintenance, behavioralwellness, cancer awareness, wildland suppression activities, and hazardousmaterials/WMD.
With a focus on academic and manipulative performance, theintensive training program places heavy emphasis on personal safety. Ouremphasis is on a guided regimen of self-discipline and skill development, whilestressing teamwork and personal initiative, which are essential to successfulfirefighting careers. Historically, fire service agencies have functioned in aspan-of-control/military environment. Fire academy students are expected to conduct themselves in a mannerconforming to this fire service tradition.

Solano Community College reached out to Los Medanos College and confirmed they offer a Certificagte of Achievement and a fire academy in the fall that does not conflict with out spring fire academy.
