Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Plant Science is designed to prepare students to develop the core skills necessary to meet the needs and challenges of modern agricultural production. Students integrate concepts from plant science, soil science, and agronomy, and apply them to agricultural production operations. A student completing the Certificate of Achievement in Plant Science can apply the credits completed towards obtaining either an Associate in Science in Plant Science or an Associate in Science in Agriculture Business degree, which both transfer to California State Universities and count towards the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Plant Science, Agriculture Studies, Agricultural and Environmental Plant Science, Agricultural Science, Agricultural Education, Agribusiness, or Agribusiness and Food Industry Management.

Students who complete this certificate will be prepared for careers in agronomy, crop science, soil science, agricultural biology, entomology, plant biotechnology, pest control, post-harvest physiology, and environmental conservation of water, farmlands, open space, and landscaped areas.

By the completion of the certificate the student will be able to:

  1. Describe relevant aspects of plant physiology, anatomy, nutrition, reproduction, and pest control to solve plant production problems under field, greenhouse, or landscape conditions.
  2. Identify and utilize pertinent concepts of soil physical, chemical, and biological properties to solve plant production problems under field, greenhouse, or landscape conditions.
  3. Apply concepts of plant propagation to effectively reproduce plants from seeds, stems, leaves, roots, and/or cuttings.

Program Goal

The Certificate of Achievement in Plant Science prepares students for careers within the agricultural industry. Through hands-on experiential learning and curriculum designed to engage students in all aspects of agriculture production and plant science, students will be prepared to enter the agriculture production job market, with high demand for those with education and skills in plant science.

Students skilled in agricultural production and plant science bring strengths from the integration of agriculture, science, and technology. This certificate combines core concepts of plant science with the additional skills and knowledge necessary to meet the needs and challenges of California's growing agronomic and horticulture industries. Production practices, crop management, and technology skills will allow students to be prepared for jobs in agronomy, crop production, plant breeding, pest control advising, harvest management, soil science, horticulture, as well as general agriculture production.
