The Wellness Coach Competencies Certificate of Achievement provides foundational training for students interested in supporting mental health, well-being, and overall wellness in community and behavioral health settings. Aligned with the California Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) Wellness Coach I competencies, the program prepares students to build practical skills in wellness education, mental health literacy, life-skills support, care navigation, crisis awareness and referral, and providing individual and group support. Students build skills in empathic communication and professional documentation while learning culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and ethical approaches that prepare them for entry-level wellness coach and behavioral health support roles, as well as future education pathways.
20-30 students annually
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
The Wellness Coach Competencies Certificate of Achievement prepares students for early entry into the behavioral health workforce by developing foundational skills aligned with the California Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) Wellness Coach competencies. The certificate supports students pursuing pathways related to behavioral health, human services, psychology, and social work by strengthening non-clinical competencies applicable across community, educational, and health-related settings. The primary goal of the certificate is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional readiness necessary to promote wellness, provide non-clinical support, and engage in prevention, early intervention, and care coordination activities under appropriate supervision. The program emphasizes culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and equity-centered approaches. Labor market information demonstrates a demand for employment in the field of wellness coaching with a projected 29% growth over the next five years. Bay Area salaries range from $35-$50 hourly.
