Digital technology has transformed radio production and broadcasting, making it possible to produce programming without huge budgets, expensive audio equipment or large studios. Today radio programming reaches massive audiences through streaming platforms that include Apple, Pandora, Spotify. Add to this the continued strength of traditional and satellite radio broadcasting and you have an industry that is strong and growing. In this six-course certificate program, students receive direct, hands-on experience creating radio programming that is intelligent, creative, compelling, entertaining and informative. The certificate covers the basic aspects of radio production, including scripting, recording, editing and broadcasting. Students will learn: • Audio programming concepts, including story development, radio vocabulary, audio production tools, studio protocol and production workflow • Writing and producing techniques including script formatting, studio management, on-air reporting and interviewing, communicating with collaborating • Audio recording fundamentals, basic sound editing and mixing • Broadcast techniques This Certificate provides a platform from which to launch further study of radio production as well as offer students basic entry level industry skills, processes and practices. It gives students crucial communication and storytelling tools they may apply in almost any area of study. Students emerge with radio programming for their personal or professional portfolio.

Program Goal
The US Bureau of Labor projects the number of jobs in radio production and broadcasting has grown since 2014 and is expected to grow 6% through 2022. In the Inland Empire/Desert and Los Angeles/Orange County areas combined the number of jobs in each of these areas created or vacated annually justifies the creation of a new radio production certificate at College of the Desert. Occupations - 2017 Jobs - 2022 Jobs - 5 Yr Change Broadcast Technicians - 2,908 - 3,069 - +161 / 6% Reporters and Correspondents - 2,469 - 2,695 - +226 / 9% Radio and Television Announcers - 1,776 - 1,800 - +24 / 1% Broadcast News Analyst - 432 - 461 - +29 / 7% Grand Total - 7,585 - 8,025 - +440 / 6% The Certificate of Achievement in Radio Production addresses these employment needs by teaching students how to write, produce, edit, broadcast and analyze content for radio production. With an emphasis on storytelling using traditional and current digital technologies, students will become immersed in the radio production process from writing through broadcast. They will become competent in understanding how radio is created and how it reaches and affects an audience. Students, through electives, may apply these skills to specific areas of interest including video journalism, mass media, new media and marketing.
