Catalog Description

The Yuba College Cal Fire Basic Wildland Firefighter Academy provides the skills and knowledge needed for the entry-level firefighter to perform his /her duties safely, effectively, and competently.

This course provides the skills and knowledge needed for the entry-level firefighter to perform his/her duties safely, effectively, and competently. The curriculum is based on CAL FIRE policy, the 2013 edition of NFPA 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications, the 2012 edition of NFPA 1051 Standard for Wildland Firefighter Professional Qualifications, and the 2008 edition of NFPA 472 Standard for Competence of responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents. Includes Title 22 First Aid/CPR and CSTI HAZMAT FRO/Decon.

 Department admission recommendation (s) are as follows:

1. Eligibility for ENGL 1A.

2. Eligibility for MATH52.

3. Basic computer skills.


Student Learning Objectives:

1. Don wildland personal protective clothing and shelter according to the manufacturers' guidelines within 60 seconds.

2. Deploy a New Generation Fire Shelter within 30 seconds.

3. Define the role of Firefighter I in the fire department.

4. Identify the mission of the fire service.

5. Understand standard operating procedures and rules and regulations of the fire department.

6. Perform a simple hose lay.

7. Perform a mobile attack.

8. Perform progressive hose lay.

9. Recognize potential or actual Haz Mat Incidents.

10. Safely isolate and make proper notifications during a simulated Haz Mat event. 

11. Contribute to effective and efficient response.

12. Explain life threatening medical emergencies, the signs and symptoms and current treatment modalities.

13. Demonstrate CPR using current standards as prescribed by the American Heart Association.

14. Explain the mechanism of trauma, the signs and symptoms and current treatment modalities.

The Fire Technology Certificate of Achievement program prepares students for a career in the fire service and provides educational and training opportunities for employment with Career, Combination, and Volunteer agencies. In addition, this program provides courses to enable students to advance in their career and apply for promotion at the driver operator and company officer level. The Fire Technology Certificate program incorporate the standardized Fire Technology curriculum identified as model curriculum through the offices of the California State Chancellor. In addition, the required courses and many electives are compliant with the National Fire Administration’s Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) model. Many elective courses are developed under the guidelines of related fire service training and educational programs such as the California State Fire Marshal (C.F.S.T.E.S, and F.S.T.E.P.), DOT (Department of Transportation),FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), and the National Fire Academy.

The Fire Technology Associate Degree program prepares students for a career in the fire service and provides educational and training opportunities for employment with Career, Combination, and Volunteer agencies. In addition, this program provides courses to enable students to advance in their career and apply for promotion at the driver operator and company officer level. The Associate Degree and Certificate programs incorporate the standardized Fire Technology curriculum identified as model curriculum through the offices of the California State Chancellor. Program Requirements Narrative

Course Student Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, a student, given wildland personal protective clothing and a New Generation Fire Shelter, will be able to don wildland personal protective clothing and shelter according to the manufacturers guidelines within 60 seconds; deploy a New Generation Fire Shelter within 30 seconds; ensure serviceability and availability on the fireline; and recognize defects and report them to a supervisor with 100% accuracy.

Upon completion of this course, a student, given a wildland or wildland urban interface fire and the standard safety policies and procedures of the agency, will be able to recognize hazards and unsafe situations, promptly communicate hazard(s) and unsafe condition(s) to a supervisor, and take appropriate action with 100% accuracy.

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of common acute medical emergencies with 100% accuracy.

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate the correct CPR procedures for cardiac arrest patients with 100% accuracy.

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to identify signs and symptoms of emergency childbirth and perform treatment for such emergencies with 100% accuracy.

Upon completion of this course student will demonstrate their ability to analyze and apply information taught in the course to correctly solve hypothetical type questions with 80% accuracy.

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to use the Department of Transportation Emergency Response Guidebook (paper or app version) to identify substances and formulate first responder actions including defining isolation distances, protective actions for the community, and actions designed to reduce or mitigate possible exposure to hazardous materials with 80% accuracy.

Upon completion of this course, given a simulated incident involving weapons of mass destruction or other hazardous materials, a student will select an appropriate decontamination procedure and determine the equipment required to implement that procedure with 100% accuracy.
