Catalog Description

This certificate is for successful completion of EMS 85 Paramedic Clinical Internship and EMS 86 Paramedic Field Internship. These are the fourth sequence of courses in the Paramedic Academy. These courses place the student in the clinical hospital setting and field setting to complete advanced patient assessments, pathological diagnosis, and treatment on live patients under the leadership and observation of a preceptor. These are the final courses in the Paramedic Academy. Classes in this area meet California State EMS Authority and ICEMA regulations.

Program Goal

This certificate will provide credit for those who complete the current required courses for the Paramedic program Paramedic Clinical Internship (EMS 85) course as well as Paramedic Field Internship (EMS 86). The Paramedic program is designed to train students to learn advanced emergency medical care for the sick and injured.  When a student completes the required class EMS 85 they will have been successfully practicing their advanced patient assessments, pathological diagnosis, and treatments on live patients in the clinical setting. After successfully completing EMS 86 Paramedic Field Internship, the capstone class of the Paramedic Academy the paramedic student will have completed advanced patient assessments, pathological diagnosis, and treatments on live patients in the field setting on an ambulance or fire apparatus under the leadership and careful observation of a field preceptor.

Program Requirements

EMS 85 Paramedic Clinical Internship 4 units 

(Formerly ALDH 56) This course is the first part of the student's internship as part of the Paramedic Program.  This includes 176 hours at an acute care facility performing Inland Counties Emergency Medical Agency Skills.  Prerequisite: Successful completion of EMS 84. 

EMS 86 Paramedic Field Internship 11.5

(Formerly ALDH 57) This course is the field internship portion of the Paramedic Program. Students will spend 600 hours in the field with a transport service performing Emergency Medical Technician skills. Prerequisite: Application and acceptance into the Paramedic Academy and successful completion of EMS 85.
