Salon Management

The Certificate of Achievement in Salon Management prepares the licensed Cosmetologist, Barber, Esthetician, or Manicurist to open and operate their own salon or manage a salon for another owner. Topics include opportunity assessment, target markets, marketing strategies, financial measurement metrics, legal considerations, human resource management, and operational and management issues.

This certificate of Achievement focuses on Salon Management niche of Entrepreneurship and small business management.  Saddleback College has over 400 completers of our non credit cosmetology related certificates of completion.  We anticipate that by year three of this program, we will have 25 completers.  Completions annually after year three should remain stable at 25 per year.

The Certificate of Achievement in Salon Management prepares the licensed Cosmetologist, Barber, Esthetician, or Manicurist to open and operate their own salon or manage a salon for another owner. Topics include opportunity assessment, target markets, marketing strategies, financial measurement metrics, legal considerations, human resource management, and operational and management issues.  We anticipate this certificate being completed by PT students in one year.

This program has two parts, Required Core units consisting of for courses equaling 10 units and restricted electives units of 6 units selected from a choice of 12 different courses related to Business.

This business program supports our Cosmetology Department by preparing students earning licenses to start their own salons or move into supervisor/management positions that improve earning capacity. It’s important to note that this program is made up of existing business courses with only one new Salon Management course.

No other community college in the Orange County region offers a Salon Management program. Many colleges, including Saddleback College, offer Small Business and Entrepreneurship programs and some of the individual business courses, but they do not offer a Salon Management course or bundle the classes in a way that specifically targets the Salon Management industry. Our Salon Management Certificate is recommended only for licensed cosmetologists, barbers, and aestheticians, which is not the case for Small Business and Entrepreneurship programs. Finally, note that this low-unit certificate is only adding one new course.
