Catalog Description

Successful completion of the Mechanical Computer Aided Design and Drafting Certificate of Achievement prepares students for entry-level positions as document support technicians in the fields of mechanical engineering and product development.

A certificate is designed to provide career technical skills; it is not equivalent to an associate degree.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Enrollment 40 per year and Completion 5 per year, growing to 20+ per year

Program Proposal Attributes

Program Award Type(s) (Check all that apply)
  • Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
Program Goal

The intent of this adjustment is to 1) Streamline award attainment, 2) Provide students with a wider variety of course selection, 3) Accommodate employer requests to have employees with broader knowledge of manufacturing, 4) Revise the required coruses in their CoA to match the Associate's degree program with the same title. CoA to provide students the option to obtain Mechanical CADD skills in a program that qualifies for financial aid, without having to complete an AS if time constraints do not permit.

Program Requirements Narrative

Successful completion of the curriculum in Mechanical Computer Aided Design and Drafting prepares students for entry-level positions as document support technicians in the fields of mechanical design, mechanical engineering, and product development.

  • Apply the steps of the design process
  • Create product design concepts using digital design software
  • Apply parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) principles to design and develop fully defined digital solid CAD models of mechanical components and assemblies
  • Demonstrate Computer Aided Design (CAD) drafting practices that conform to ASME Y14.5 standards
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles to ASME Y14.5 standards
  • Create annotated Computer Aided Design (CAD) models using Model Based Definition (MBD) techniques to digitally define mechanical designs to ASME Y14.41 standards
  • Demonstrate safe setup and operation of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) equipment manufacture prototype parts
  • Apply Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology to manufacture product prototypes

For the certificate, students must fulfill the following requirements
