Kitchen and Bath Design

The Kitchen and Bath Design certificate prepares students for specialized careers in residential kitchen and bath design. As an NKBA affiliated program, coursework emphasizes industry standards and includes training in design planning, technical drawing, digital design, and client presentations. Students develop skills in space planning, materials, specifications, lighting, and building codes specific to kitchen and bath environments, while building professional portfolios and gaining practical experience through internships in the kitchen and bath design field to support career entry or advancement. This certificate supports employment in residential design firms, kitchen and bath showrooms, and design-build companies. Courses may also be applied toward other Interior Design certificates and the AS degree. Students who complete the Kitchen and Bath Design certificate meet the educational requirements to apply for the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) Certification Program, upon completion of the required industry work experience.

The program aims to equip students with the specialized skills required for occupational entry into positions at design firms, showrooms, and design-build companies. It addresses industry demand for trained kitchen and bath designers by aligning with professional standards and certification pathways. Additionally, the program supports career and technical education (CTE) transfer preparation by providing foundational and advanced skills applicable across interior design disciplines.

The Kitchen and Bath Design Certificate follows a structured sequence beginning with foundational coursework, progressing through technical and digital skill development, and culminating in specialized studios with project-based learning. While there are no formal prerequisites, students are encouraged to follow the recommended course progression. The program includes portfolio development and hands-on experience through a required internship, with work-based learning (WBL) supporting career readiness. Electives allow students to tailor their studies to individual interests and goals. Although licensure is not required in California, the program aligns with National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) standards, and students who complete the certificate and required industry experience are eligible to apply for NKBA certification.
