Catalog Description

This course introduces students to the characteristics of the criminal justice system in the United States. Focus is placed on examining crime measurement, theoretical explanations of crime, responses to crime, components of the system, and current challenges to the system. The course examines the evolution of the principles and approaches utilized by the justice system and the evolving forces which have shaped those principles and approaches. Although justice structure and process is examined in a cross cultural context, emphasis is placed on the US justice system, particularly the structure and function of US police, courts, and corrections. Students are introduced to the origins and development of criminal law, legal process, and sentencing and incarceration policies. Approved for pass / no pass grading option. C-ID AJ 110 (A/CSU/UC).

As you will notice, the Administration of Justice program consistently enrolls over 900 students per semester with an impressive 94% retention and an 86% success rate. This past year 2019/2020, we experienced a 7.8% increase in students.

Program Goal

The Administration of Justice Certificate of Achievement prepares students for a variety of careers in the evolving field of justice. Justice professionals in the United States work in a variety of capacities in law enforcement, corrections, and courts to support the evolving demands of our diverse society. Career opportunities in policing, probation, parole, corrections, and other government agencies continue to be in high demand.

The curriculum surveys the foundational history, evolution, theories, and practical application of knowledge in areas of the justice system. Curriculum is kept current by continuous contact with other colleges and justice related agencies.

The Administration of Justice Certificate prepares students for careers in law enforcement, probation, parole, and corrections.

By the completion of the certificate the student will be able to:

1. Identify the procedures involved in the justice system from arrest to release;

2. Identify how the criminal justice system works as a system.

3. Identify the importance of the inter-cooperation of courts, corrections, and law enforcement.

Program Requirements Narrative

The Administration of Justice Certificate prepares students for careers in law enforcement,probation, parole, and corrections. Career opportunities are expected to continue to be

strong in these areas. The curriculum surveys the history, development, theory and practical application of knowledge in areas of law enforcement, corrections, probation and

parole. Curriculum is kept current by continuous contact with other colleges and criminal justice agencies. The training programs are certified by the California Commission on

Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) and Standards and Training for Corrections(S.T.C.).

By the completion of the certificate the student will be able to:

1. Identify the procedures involved in the justice system from arrest to release;

2. Identify how the criminal justice system works as a system.

3. Identify the importance of the inter-cooperation between courts, corrections, and law enforcement.

A certificate maybe earned in Administration of Justice upon satisfactory completion of 18.0units. Courses must be selected from the following groups as indicated:
