Automotive Technology (094800)
08/01/21
The Ford sponsored Automotive Student Service Education Training (ASSET) degree program offers a unique job training opportunity to students sponsored by a Ford dealership. The training includes all major content areas of Ford automotive systems. Students will demonstrate competency by efficiently performing prescribed tasks for Ford certification through laboratory or work experience assessments. Students who have previous college credit or an associate degree or higher may be exempt from all or part of the general education and Ford ASSET major credit requirements. Furthermore, students may use previous military training, automotive classes from accredited colleges, trade schools, or manufacturers training for credit by examination. Please contact the department coordinator for more details.
Enrollment completers are projected to be 30 per year.
Program Proposal Attributes
- A.S. Degree (S)
The Ford ASSET Program at Cuyamaca College is a two-year associates degree and certification program designed to create a clear pathway toward course completion for students and provide Ford and Lincoln dealerships with highly qualified and trained automotive service technicians. Ford/Lincoln dealership sponsorship is a requirement of the Ford ASSET program. This work experience opportunity will provide the student with hands-on, competency-based training to allow for success and increased wages upon graduation. The cornerstone of the ASSET program hinges on a unique and long-standing partnership with Ford to foster student success in the automotive technology industry using innovative practices to accelerate learning and facilitate student placement in a fast-growing and high-paying industry.
Once enrolled in the Ford ASSET program, students are connected to an integrated and coordinated learning community designed for success and achievement. All students enrolled in the program work closely with a team of industry leaders and college faculty/staff to guide, mentor, teach, evaluate, and sponsor students from program inception to job placement.
A student who wants to participate in the Cuyamaca College distance education program must enroll in Cuyamaca College, minimally for the “B Test” courses and enroll in a college automotive program nearest their home. Work experience and general education classes should be a part of their college education plan. The Canvas Learning Management System is used to manage and work with students, respective colleges, Ford/Lincoln dealership personnel, and counselors.

Jennifer Lewis · 03/12/21 Southwestern supports this program modification. Jesse Lopez · 03/11/21 Based on available LMI and COE's endorsement, Miramar College also supports the program modification. Nichol Roe · 03/11/21 Palomar College supports this program modification Tina Recalde · 03/11/21 SD Mesa supports the program modification. Dr. Javier Ayala · 03/10/21 Endorse Dr. Al Taccone · 03/08/21 MiraCosta College supports this program modification and endorses the COE recommendation and, probably, results from gainful employment/program promotion at the college level. Tina Ngo Bartel · 03/06/21 Cuyamaca College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. There is a supply gap (110 annual job openings), entry-level wages are $14.69 and median wages are $20.74. Based on available LMI, the COE report supports the program modification. The COE also recommends that colleges communicate to students that the occupation’s entry-level wages are below the living wage, suggesting that more training and experience are needed for workers in this occupation to reach median wage levels.
