Catalog Description

The Mammography Certificate Program prepares students in a radiologic technology program and licensed radiographers to become entry-level imaging professionals in mammography, supporting women’s health through early breast cancer detection and patient advocacy. This program allows students to enhance patient outcomes and advance their careers in a high-demand specialty. The certificate satisfies the required didactic and clinical education components set by the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), the California Department of Public Health – Radiologic Health Branch (CA-DPH RHB), and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) for eligibility to earn a post-primary certification in mammography.

• Enrollment limitations:
• must be a Senior LACC Radiologic Technology student (completed all the courses listed in the New Vocational Program Informal Notice Form_LACC Rad Tech_2025) OR
• must be a Senior Radiologic Technology student from an external RT program OR
o *External Senior RT student – must provide proof of enrollment from the current RT program and a permission letter from your program director (and completed the courses (or equivalent) listed in the New Vocational Program Informal Notice Form_LACC Rad Tech_2025)

  • must be a Certified Radiologic Technologist

o Certified RT – must provide a copy of your state certification and ARRT *

• RT Graduates and Radiologic Technologists will be able to pursue a career as a mammographer after successfully passing their ARRT Mammography Board exam and being approved for a CA DPH RHB Mammography permit and/or passing their CA DPH RHB Mammography Board exam. Thereafter, technologists can be placed for clinical training before applying for a mammography job. (CA State does not mandate technologists to have ARRT Mammography certification before applying for jobs).

The only neighboring colleges that offer a Mammography Certificate Program are Pasadena CC (PCC), Cal State University Northridge (CSUN), and Mount  San Antonio College (Mt. SAC). Both PCC and CSUN offer only the didactic portion of the education. Their clinical sites do not guarantee the students clinical training. Mt. SAC only provides clinical training to its students, not technologists.

I have added a copy of the Collegial Consultation email I sent out to all LARC voting members that is not a Draft. I have also added recent Advisory Board minutes that show the Certificate was recommended. Thanks!
