Program Requirements Narrative

The Business Data Analytics Certificate of Achievement is designed to provide high school students with a broad introduction to the business field and a basic foundation in data analysis and interpretation. This certificate will allow students to obtain high-demand labor market skills in the industry andother areas such as healthcare, education, and government agencies. It will act as a degree pathway for those considering completing an associate of arts orscience degree or transferring to a four-year university.

The certificate was specifically designed as a high school career-technical education pathway for high schools in the Palos Verdes Unified School District (PVPUSD) in our community. The college collaborated with PVPUSD to hold student focus groups, student surveys, information sessions with question-and-answer sessions, parent focus groups, and parent surveys. The results of the focus groups, surveys, and feedback during informational sessions supported the development of a general business pathway, fulfilling some of the core business degree requirements such as Business 001 and Business 005, courses that allow for the development of high demand data analytic skills (Stat 101 Statistics for the Social Sciences and Psych 12 Data Management and Visualization), and critical thinking skills (Critical Thinking Psych 66). In addition, majority of the students selected Introduction to Social Media Marketing as the elective they would be most interested in taking in the program. High school students in this pathway will receive dual credit for the courses, fulfilling their high school loads and allowing them to obtain college credit for the courses in this certificate.

The college’s Business Advisory Board unanimously approved the certificate, concluding that the certificate provides students with experience in the high-demand skills needed for entry-level employees in the field. The Advisory Board felt the certificate met the needs of the community it is intended to serve and providesa broad overview of the business industry allowing students to obtain general knowledge of the different areas of business. The Board supported the inclusion of the program emphasis on foundational data analytic skills, given that this was reported to be one of the major skill gaps for incoming employees and is needed in all areas of business (e.g., marketing, sales, management, human resources).
