Course Report

Program Requirements Narrative

Web Design and Development is a series of courses that bind both Website Design and Website Programming to produce quality information for an organization.  Web professionals that do both design and programming are generally employed in small-to-midsize businesses that need their employees to have a wide range of skills to implement a business’s Web presence.

In the first semester, students learn the fundamentals of designing and creating web pages.  In the next semester they learn more advanced web page design techniques, how to manipulate graphics for use on web pages ,and browser-based programming to make web pages respond dynamically to website user interactions.

In the 2ndyear (3rd semester) the student learns how to write web-server programs (aka cloud-based programs) using a database to store and manipulate data for business processes and for presentation of reports to the website user.  Additionally, they learn how to use an important content manager system, Wordpress, to speed the development of professional websites from templates.

In the last semester, students learn how to market their websites using traditional marketing techniques and how to promote their websites on social media.

Palomar College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with developing a program because 1) the occupations’ entry-level and median earnings are above the living wage; 2) an associate degree is needed for the occupation; and 3) a supply gap exists. The region should note that employers typically require a bachelor’s degree as the minimum requirement for computer programmers.
