Catalog Description
This certificate program is designed for students that are currently in or anticipating entry into the police hiring and background process. This certificate emphasizes those courses that most effectively “fast-track” a pre-academy student for entry and successful completion of basic police academy training, and is particularly valuable for students aspiring to careers within policing who have come from other fields of study or employment, and as a result hold limited exposure/knowledge related to the criminal justice system. The adding of a physical conditioning component prepares students for the physical rigors of police academy training.

  • Certificate of Achievement: 8 to fewer than 16 semester (or 12 to fewer than 24 quarter) units (B)
Program Goal
This program is designed to expose potential police or deputy sheriff applicants to a wide range of subject knowledge that will be closely related to the learning domains to which they will be held accountable during their academy training. General emphasis is placed upon the “academic” aspects of police academy curricula including: systems and subsystems contained within the American criminal justice system; their processes and procedures; historical aspects of policing; basic concepts of criminal law; philosophy of law and constitutional provisions; definitions and classification of crimes, and the applications of these to the system of justice. Significant coursework is dedicated to ethics and professionalism in policing as well. More specific “practical” exposure related to police patrol operations is included in the certificate coursework, including: patrol techniques; vehicle pullover and approach; area searches; departmental policies and procedures; the reasonable and ethical use of force; and the preparation of detailed police reports to document, explain, and justify officer actions.
