Project Management - Certificate of Achievement

The Project Management program prepares students to find employment as project managers.in business, finance, banking, and accounting firms, technology and pharmaceutical companies, event management, local, state, and federal government, healthcare, construction, and education, to name a few. The focus is on developing the skills to run projects from start to finish. Students learn both methodology and best practices. They will complete a review course to prepare for a certification exam.

For any business to be successful, project management is essential; it is the core of nearly all daily operations. A project manager is responsible for grouping skilled workers into teams, constructing and instituting team plans, and facilitating the execution of all projects. This is all done to achieve the company’s goals. Specific duties and roles for each project manager depend, to a large extent, on the company the manager works for and the industry in which the company operates. Industries that use project management: business, finance, banking and accounting firms, technology and pharmaceutical companies, event management, local, state and federal government, healthcare, and education to name a few. This career allows students to be flexible in using their skills in an ever changing marketplace.

The  current Project Management Program consists of 5 courses leading to the Project Management Certificate of Proficiency (15 units). The program is being modified by  increased to 16 units and will offer a Certificate of Achievement.  An additional 1 unit skills based course, Skills for Supervisors,  class   It requires both intellectual commitment and the development of practical project management skills. All classes are available online. This is NOT a program for transfer to a university. It is intended to assist individuals in obtaining skills necessary to prepare for industry certification.

Although individual project management courses are offered, they are usually part of programs in construction management, IT management, architecture, and engineering. Moreno College focuses on IT; San Jose State offers a Google Certificate; and Cal State East Bay offers one specialized course that integrates with a variety of its programs. This certificate includes both in-classroom and online courses that integrate project management principles and cover predictive and agile methodologies and technologies, including AI, across the full spectrum of industry in the Bay Area. Credit can count toward electives for any degree.   It includes best practices outlined by the Project Management Institute, as well as a comprehensive preparation course for the Project Management Institute certification exam.

Only one program is offered at Los Positas College, which has a similar program, but it is non-credit learning.  I spoke with Bryan Davis, the program manager, and he explained that it is an online-only course offered by the Cengage Learning Program, created by Cengage employees and sold to various colleges and universities. No Los Positas faculty were involved.
