Child Nutrition Fundamentals Certificate

The Child Nutrition Fundamentals Certificate provides a comprehensive foundation in pediatric nutrition, food safety, and child development. This program bridges the gap between nutrition science and the practical application of serving children and their families in diverse professional settings. Students gain essential knowledge and skills for specialized roles in K-12 school nutrition, community health organizations, and pediatric healthcare environments. This certificate requires a total of 17-19 units. A grade of C or better is required in each course taken. 

This certificate is designed to bridge the gap between nutrition services, child development, and community health. This program equips a vital workforce with the skills needed to implement and manage nutrition services and meet evolving state and federal health mandates. By aligning curriculum with industry-recognized professional standards, the program ensures students are ready for the practical demands of the field. By bringing together Nutrition, Foods, and Child Development, the program uses a 'whole child' approach that connects nutrition science with how children actually grow and behave. This prepares graduates for essential roles in K-12 school nutrition, community health organizations, and pediatric healthcare environments. As a stackable milestone, this certificate creates a clear pathway for career growth and seamless transfer into Associate Degree programs in Nutrition and Early Childhood Education, empowering students to become responsible leaders who advocate for the health of our diverse communities.

Upon successful completion of the certificate, students will be able to:

1. Apply principles of human nutrition and food safety standards to implement and manage health-promoting nutrition services for children and their families.
2. Assess and monitor the nutritional, safety, and developmental needs of children to facilitate age-appropriate nutrition strategies and services that support the 'whole child'.

No active inventory records need to be made inactive or changed as a result of approval of the Child Nutrition Fundamentals Certificate. This certificate does not replace any existing program. 

This unique program was developed by the Nutrition and Foods Department in collaboration with the Child Development Department at Fullerton College. The curriculum will be housed under Nutrition and Foods, where we currently offer four certificates and two degrees. The certificates include the Nutrition and Foods Certificate, Dietary Manager Certificate, Sports Nutrition Certificate, and Plant-Based Nutrition and Sustainable Horticulture Certificate. The degrees include the Nutrition and Dietetics Associate in Science Degree for Transfer (AS-T) and the Nutrition and Foods Associate in Arts Degree (AA).

There appear to be no similar programs at other colleges in our service area.
