Catalog Description

The Long Beach City College Commercial Music Certificate of Achievement is designed to teach the fundamental knowledge and skills needed for today’s music professionals. The certificate is designed to successfully prepare students for employment with entry positions in recording, sound production, performance, and other music-related industries. It surveys a broad spectrum of music industry fundamentals such as signal flow, audio recording, audio production, copyright, publishing, licensing, marketing, and music monetization in the internet age.

*Demonstrate the industry-standard techniques of modern recording, from analog signal flow to digital audio workstations.

*Develop and apply the necessary skills required to work and perform in the commercial music industry. Examine and evaluate changes in music technologies, policies, markets, and business practices to adapt to them.

Program Goal

The program will prepare students to enter the commercial music field with the industry-standard techniques of modern recording, from analog signal flow to digital audio workstations. The Long Beach City College Department of Performing Arts has an active and diverse program in place to fulfill its responsibilities in support of the educational mission of the college. The commercial music program is designed to complement our current music offerings and simultaneously work towards the colleges strategic plan of increased community workforce development.

The program does not replace any existing program(s) on the college’s inventory. There are no related programs currently offered by the college. The course on Pro Tools (R_TV60) is currently shared between Radio/TV and Film, and the Commercial Music certificate and Pro Tools class crossover has been discussed previously. This program should be placed in the Department of Performing Arts, under the School of Social Sciences and Arts.
