Catalog Description

The Associate Teacher Certificate (Career Technical) is designed to prepare students to become effective teachers for young children between 0 and 5 years of age, and meets entry-level professional requirements for employment in some licensed early childhood programs.  The Associate Teacher Certificate also fulfills the coursework requirements to be an Associate Teacher in the California Child Development Permit Matrix.

Program Goal

Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:

  Understand and apply knowledge of child development theories and principles, encompassing children's physical, intellectual, social, and emotional development that recognizes various contexts that influence children as individuals and plan for all children's developmental needs from both an individualized and group perspective.

  Demonstrate knowledge of the foundations of teaching and learning through curriculum for young children, including dual-language learners and children with special needs.

The courses in this certificate have been offered for years and folks have been taking them to obtain the Associate Teacher permit. Packaging them in a certificate that corresponds with the permit is new.
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
The demand for Associate Teachers in childcare settings is great. These courses have been offered at MPC for years. No additional impact is expected at similar programs at neighboring colleges.
