Catalog Description

The Basic Fire Academy Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students to become entry-level firefighters in local and state fire agencies in California. This fundamental intensive training course includes all learning domains from the California Fire Marshal’s office, which includes instruction in structural, commercial and industrial firefighting. This certificate also meets the certification requirements of the State Fire Marshal for employment opportunities as a firefighter in California. Students who successfully complete this certificate program are eligible for hire in a public (municipal) and private fire department.

Purpose and Goals of Certificate:

 

The purpose of the RioHondo Basic Fire Academy certificate is to prepare students mentally, morally,emotionally, physically and academically to enter a career in the fire service.The fire academy instruction is directed towards providing a sensitivity to,and understanding of, the role of a firefighter within the fire service, theemploying agency and the community to be served. The Rio Hondo Basic FireAcademy provides student with in-depth knowledge of the duties andresponsibilities of a firefighter. Physical fitness and firefighter safety is alarge part of the program regime.

 

The primary goal ofthe Rio Hondo Basic Fire Academy is to meet the needs of students who desire tobe firefighters and provide them with all facets of the curriculum to be ableto be successful on the California State Fire Marshal testing and manipulativeskills certification processes. Students may also utilize this training toapply for any fire agency in the country.

 

Specific goals the academy entail:

 

  • The effective delivery of training that is defined by the California State Fire Marshal (CSFM).

 

  • Creation of a student-centered, respect-based learning environment, which utilizes the guided pathway project pillars to help ensure student success.

 

  • Instruction that teaches students the fundamentals of the fire service.

 

 

  • Preparing the students for moral and ethical challenges through character building and leadership training as a firefighter.

 

 

  • Maintaining a training environment consistent with the ethical, mental, academic and physical demands of a fire fighter.
