Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) is designed for those interested in welding structural steel. Course work includes a comprehensive study with an emphasis on application of fundamental welding techniques and safe industry practices. Potential careers that the program prepares students for include, but are not limited to, Pipe Fitters and Steamfitters, Sheet Metal Workers, as well as Structural Iron and Steel Workers There are material fees for the courses associated with the program totaling $80.00. The student will also be required to provide all PPE safety gear (personal protective gear) required to safely perform SMAW welds in the lab.

Program Goal

1. Demonstrate advanced level skills to produce quality welds in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) process.

The basic occupational competencies students will acquire include: acquire the necessary skills to produce quality SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welds) in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions; able to interpret welding symbols and drawings required for entry into the welding and metal fabrication industry; be able to interpret the text, figures and tables found in AWS (American Welding Society) D1.1 Structural Welding Code book; be prepared for an entry level welding positions as a sheet metal worker, ironworker or pipefitter.

Due to Guided Pathway efforts, Long Beach City College is sending low unit Certificates of Accomplishment (12-17.5 units) to the Chancellor’s Office for approval. Once approved, these already-existing programs will become Certificates of Achievement and will allow the College to better serve students and assist in streamlining and increasing completions.
