Catalog Description
The student successfully completing the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)/Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) Certificate of Achievement will acquire skills to qualify for entry-level employment in several areas. Trades involved in the construction of buildings and bridges, utilize these skills as well as other industries such as motorsports/automotive design, robotics, industrial maintenance, and heavy equipment fabrication. The student will be proficient in the setup/maintenance of the required equipment for these processes, able to identify proper electrodes/shielding gases for joining a given material type and thickness, operate the required equipment in a safe and proper manner, display significant manipulatory skills in multiple weld positions and as well have sufficient understanding of proper layout and measuring procedures. In addition, the student will be able to describe and demonstrate important employability skills such as proper work ethic, team building, and interpersonal communication practices and their importance in the workplace.
Program Learning Outcomes
1. Student will demonstrate the correct use of parallel line development, radial line development, and triangulation during the layout of flat patterns for projects. During the execution of pattern development student will utilize proper measuring tools and techniques, identify the proper equipment to be used for metal fabrication/welding, while achieving a high level of accuracy in relation to fit and finish of the final product.
2. The student will demonstrate significant blueprint reading knowledge through lab exercises using symbols in accordance with American Welding Society publication 2.4 "Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and Non-Destructive Examinations".
3. The student will demonstrate Gas Metal Arc and Flux Core Arc Welding practices in practical lab exercises utilizing industry accepted safety practices, equipment set up/knowledge and operation, and complete weldments free of defects or discontinuities in accordance to the applicable code or standard.

Program Goal
This certificate is designed to more closely meet the needs of business and industry in relation to specific segments of the welding and fabrication fields. Specific welding processes typically lend themselves, and are usually chosen, based on several factors: metal/alloy type to be joined, material thickness, application, service conditions, and many more. A process deemed ideal for one set of circumstances does not usually translate into being acceptable or would even be considered for a different application. This certificate will allow the student to focus on the skills and abilities they will need to enter their chosen field as soon as possible, and allow the employer to more easily identify them as qualified candidates.
1. Display significant knowledge and manipulatory skills in the GMAW/FCAW processes regarding safety procedures, equipment use and maintenance, process understanding and application, and proper selection of filler metals and/or gases for specific materials joining of various alloys and thicknesses.
2. Identify and address any defects or discontinuities present in welds performed with the GMAW/FCAW processes, and how to effectively repair or prevent future occurrences as outlined in the applicable code, standard, or determined by eventual service requirements.
3. Demonstrate the skills needed to accurately layout and fabricate the various components needed to complete a weldment based on a specific design or blueprint. Parallel line, radial line, and triangulation methods will be used for pattern development. Proficiency in the use of hand tools, metalworking equipment, and various measuring devices will be apparent and applied during the layout and fabrication process.
4. Describe and demonstrate important employability skills such as proper work ethic, team building, and interpersonal communication practices and their importance in the workplace.
