The CNC Setup Operator Skills Certificate is designed to provide students with short-term training to develop the intermediate-level skills, knowledge, and abilities required to enter the workforce as a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) Machine Setup Operator (Level II Machinist). This program is the second level in a stackable certificate progression aligned with local industry apprenticeship programs and further study within the Advanced Manufacturing program.

A certificate is designed to provide career technical skills; it is not equivalent to an associate degree.

Program Goal

Provide students with middle skills needed for living-wage employment in manufacturing industries. The intent of this adjustment is to 1) Streamline award attainment, 2) Provide students with a wider variety of course selection, 3) Accommodate employer requests to have employees with broader knowledge of manufacturing and safety 5) Provide a credit skills certificate for the ADVM program, which is stackable towards a CoA of AS.

Program Requirements Narrative

CNC Machine Setup Operator certificate of achievement provides a comprehensive understanding of the skills necessary for success in the Advanced Manufacturing industry. This program is designed to enable the student to enter industry with problem-solving skills in design, production, planning, materials handling, quality control, inspection and programming with computer-aided controls. The student, upon the successful completion of the program, will have job–entry skill and career advancement opportunities.

  • Demonstrate safe operation of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) equipment
  • Evaluate the quality of the product of an industrial process based on given design specifications
  • Identify necessary tools and describe tool functions for machining a given part design
  • Interpret basic machine code on a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine and adjust machine settings to make parts that meet design specifications

Program originally submitted as a program modification of a program that replaced 100% of the courses with new courses that are prerequisites for the original course list. Proposal changed to a new program to replace the existing certificate program, better aligning with industry needs and maintaining the benefits of a short-term program for job skills that lead to employment. This certificate is designed to stack with larger skills certificates and AS degree programs and aligns with levels in the industry partner apprenticeship program.
