Catalog Description

The Multi-Language Learner (MLL) Certificate is designed to prepare students to work with young multilingual learners and their families in Early Care and Education settings. This Certificate provides increased knowledge, skills, and teaching competencies for both pre-and in-service Early Childhood Educators and those pursing a P-3 or Multi Subject Credential.

A Certificate of Achievement in Multi-Language Learner Specialization will be awarded upon satisfactory completion of the curriculum listed below, with a minimum grade of a "C" (or P) in each course in the certificate and maintains a 2.0 GPA.

Enrollment Completer Projections

There are increasing number of students enrolled in Child Development programs that are expected to earn this certificate especially due to the rising population in the Central Valley Region of multi-language students and families.

Program Proposal Attributes

Program Award Type(s) (Check all that apply)
  • Certificate of Achievement: 8 to fewer than 16 semester (or 12 to fewer than 24 quarter) units (B)
Program Goal

The certificate will provide both pre- and in-service early childhood educators the training to enter the workforce prepared to ensure equity by recognizing, respecting, and attending to the diverse strengths and challenges of young learners and their families. Likewise, this Certificate directly aligns with the California Child Development Permit, a credential required for employment in the field of Child Development and Early Childhood Education, issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. This Permit allows teachers to advance on the Permit Matrix by obtaining a “specialization” within the major (e.g., Infant and Toddler, School Age, Challenging Behaviors, Foundations in ECE, etc.). As such, students who complete this proposed Certificate of Achievement will be considered eligible for an advanced level Permit (e.g., Master Teacher).
