Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Construction Management: Advanced Skills is a course of study that includes courses which focus on the technical and management skills required in the field of Construction Management as well as courses which provide knowledge in the technical aspects of construction as well as in general business. This certificate is designed to meet the needs of students who are returning to college after completing a degree in another field who seek to enter into the profession of Construction Management. It also provides students who are currently employed in the construction management industry in entry-level positions the opportunity for advancement by enhancing their knowledge. All courses required for the Certificate Programs are also required for the Associated in Science Degree Program making it easier for students to continue their studies to enhance their opportunities for career advancement.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this program, students will be able to:

• Estimate, organize and manage construction project resources through the use of cost estimates and schedules.

• Manage and control construction work activities utilizing project control methodologies and quality control and assurance techniques.

• Analyze and interpret construction documents. Assess the role of material selection and structures in the field of construction management.

• Assess the contractual and regulatory considerations and restraints associated with the administration of a construction project.

• Manage a construction project utilizing computer software.

• Assess effective methods of communication in a professional work environment.

The minimum time for completion of this certificate is 3 semesters. Completion time will vary based on student preparation and number of classes completed per semester.

Enrollment Completer Projections

From the enrollment in the Construction Management, we project the following:

There are approximately 166 students currently taking Construction Management Courses. For the 2017/18 academic year, 7 students completed the Advanced Skills Certificate of Achievement. Enrollment in Construction Management courses has increased approximately 65% over the last four years. As it requires a minimum of three semesters to complete this program we expect that program completion will increase over the coming semesters to reflect the increased enrollment, to approximately 10-12 completers per year.

Program Goal

The current Construction Management Program at CCSF includes two Certificate Programs, a 19-unit Certificate of Achievement in Construction: Core Skills and a 30-unit Certificate of Achievement in Construction Management: Advanced Skills Program, as well as an Associate Degree Program. These Certificate Programs help make the CM program more responsive to the needs of the students, as well as make it more accessible. Many of our students are already working within the profession, often within the construct trades, and are seeking career advancement. These students typically have a strong understanding of the construction industry but lack the technical and management skills necessary to advance, within the industry, into a management role. Other students already have degrees in related fields, such as in business, and are seeking to gain the specific construction-related technical knowledge and skills that would allow them to gain entry into the Construction Management Profession. The courses required for the Certificate Programs are also required for the Associate Degree Program and would, for the most part, be required for transfer into a four-year program. The Certificate Programs thus allows students to gain job-specific skills that would give them employment opportunities in an expedited manner while preserving their options to pursue more advanced degrees in the future.

Based upon discussions with our Advisory Board, it was determined that revisions were required to our Core Skills Certificate Program. The Core Skills Certificate Program was revised in 2018. The Advanced Skills Program is now being revised in conjunction with these revisions. The current revisions are minor, reflecting course changes within the College.
