Catalog Description

Program Goals and Objectives

The Certificate of Achievement in Engineering Technology Fundamentals program is primarily designed to prepare students for the workforce. The program provides students with industry desirable hands-on skills needed for entry-level technical positions in engineering companies.

The competencies students will achieve in this program include basic trouble shooting techniques, problem solving, lab notebook record-keeping,hands-on skills with common measurement and instrumentation equipment used in engineering,an understanding of safety in the laboratory, and the professional skills our industry advisory board has identified as critical to success in the engineering workforce.

Catalog Description

The Certificate of Achievement in Engineering Technology Fundamentals provides entry-level engineering technicians with the relevant basic knowledge and skills for various Engineering Technology and Engineering Industries. The Certificate of Achievement provides students the opportunity to progress in their Engineering/Engineering Technology education and achieve an Associate of Science Degree in either Smart Manufacturing Technology or Bioengineering. This certificate of achievement also provides a good introductory engineering foundation for transfer students.

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Apply basic scientific methods, scientific reasoning, engineering principles, techniques     and/or basic formulas to solve problems related to engineering technology.
2. Demonstrate effective communication and teamwork by contributing productively to the success of team-based engineering technology projects.

Program Requirements

a)    Complete Major Field Courses.

b)    Complete at least six units at Ohlone College.

c)     Maintain a 2.0 grade point average in Major Field courses.

Master Planning

The goal of the Engineering Technology Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement Program is to prepare students for entry-level positions in engineering industries such as those in local national laboratories.  This goal is aligned with the mission of the California Community College system to prepare students for career technical pathways.  It also supports Ohlone College’s mission to offer instruction for career development.  Ohlone’s Mission Statement states:

“The mission of Ohlone College is to serve the community by offering instruction for basic skills, career entry, university transfer, economic development, and personal enrichment for all who can benefit from our instruction in an environment where student learning success is highly valued, supported, and continually assessed.”

Furthermore, the Engineering  Technology Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement Program supports the college in achieving strategic goals and objectives listed in its 2015-2020 Master Plan. For example, Ohlone’s 2015-2020 Master Plan lists the college’s second strategic goal as follows:

“Provide relevant sustainable Career and Technical Education (CTE) that is responsive to student needs, supports student academic success, and prepares students to meet industry needs.”

The theoretical knowledge and laboratory skills acquired by students in this program will enhance their success with obtaining entry-level jobs that require one year of  basic college-level science and engineering technology.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Enrollment and Completer Projections

The Engineering & Engineering Technology department has seen a significant growth over the last 3 years. This growth is projected to continue over time. The Engineering Technology Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement  is a new addition to the department. The table below shows enrollment data of existing engineering and engineering technology  courses and also data on some courses that are part of the new Engineering Technology Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement. Based on existing data, the annual completer projections for the The Engineering Technology Fundamentals Certificate of Achievement is 40-50 students/year.

Goal of Program

CTE

Include any other information you would like to share.
Ohlone College for the last 5 years has been part of the NSF funded STEM Core initiative. The Engineering Technology Certificate of Achievement at Ohlone College will provide industry desirable certificates of achievements to students on the STEM Core Programs. Ohlone takes a lead in this Regionally and seeks to support other Regional Community Colleges in developing similar certificates for STEM Core students. The Program has strong industry participation with significant number of students getting hired by companies like Lam Research, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory(LLNL), and Stanford Linear Accelerator National Laboratory(SLAC).
Please list similar programs at other colleges in the service area which may be impacted, including the name of the college, the name of the program that may be impacted, the name of the person you contacted and the outcome of that contact.
Although there are a number of Engineering Technician Programs in the Bay Area, the Engineering Technology Certificate of Achievement Program at Ohlone is the first of its kind among Community Colleges in the Area. While colleges like Las Positas College, Laney College and Chabot College offer Engineering Technician Programs; none of these colleges offers a similar Engineering Technology Technology Certificate of Achievement. Therefore, Ohlone stands out as one of the few Community Colleges in Region to offer an Engineering Technology Certificate of Achievement.
