Catalog Description

The Personal Trainer Certificate of Achievement is designed for students interested in pursuing careers in the personal training and fitness industries. Topics include fitness principles in fitness, anatomy and physiology, fitness and wellness assessment tests, safety concerns and risk management, proper exercise techniques and client relationship building. Students completing this program will be prepared to pass the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certification Exam.  

1. Demonstrate knowledge of theory and skillsets related to different components of personal training.  

2. Demonstrate human movement science, functional anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology skills.

Program Goal

The Personal Trainer Certificate program provides students with the theoretical knowledge, fundamental principles and practical skills needed for careers in the field of personal training and fitness instruction. Students will be prepared for entry-level positions in the growing health and fitness industry, wellness centers, schools, YMCAs, and for training individual clients.  Students will also apply their knowledge and skills by working with clients in a practicum setting.  Upon completion of the program, students will be prepared for the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Certification Exam.

This program serves the college’s mission by providing equitable learning and work force development. Completers may find employment with existing fitness companies or build their own business. Sixty percent of current student completers are Hispanic.

The Personal Trainer Certificate is housed in the Kinesiology/ Health Education Department as part of the Kinesiology program. While the certificate is valuable as a stand-alone program, students majoring in kinesiology may earn this certificate while completing the requirements for the Kinesiology Associate of Arts Transfer degree, Kinesiology Associate of Arts degree and/or the Athletic Coaching Certificate of Accomplishment.
