Catalog Description

The paramedic is an allied health professional whose primary focus is to provide advance emergency medical care for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system (EMS). This individual paramedic possesses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation.Paramedics function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Paramedics perform intervention with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance and is the continuation of Emergency Medical Systems training. The paramedic program is a two semester program for a total of 1295 hours. The first semester consists of the paramedic prep -course and the cognitive and psycho-motor courses. The second semester consists of the clinical,field and capstone courses.

Program Goal

The application for Paramedic Training Program approval is a joint process that also involves accreditation processes through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). California requires programs to work towards and maintain CAAHEPaccreditation for graduates to be able to sit for the National Registry Examination for paramedic licensure.

Program Requirements Narrative

Students are required to be current certified EMTs, and/or current NREMT certified. Students must maintain current American Heart Association basic life support certification, pass drug and background screening. Students will be required to provide a vaccination titer, PPD and/or chest xray.
