Catalog Description

The Sound Production certificate teaches the craft and techniques of sound recording.  Students will learn the basics of recording hardware and software and will work in a hands-on environment and learn how to operate the equipment used in recording sound.Students are prepared for entry-level positions at recording studios, video production, game audio, sound reinforcement companies, mobile on-site music recording companies, and radio production facilities.

Enrollment Completer Projections

Solano College has not offered any sound recording courses in the past 2 years, so there is no recent data. In the distant past, when these courses were offered the sections were full with a waiting list. We gather there is demand but cannot quantify exactly how many seats until we offer this degree and these classes again.

There are currently no Sound Production programs at Solano Community College or in the service area (North Bay sub-region). Based on all available data, there appears to be an “undersupply” of Music Production workers compared to the demand for this cluster of occupations in the Bay region and in the North Bay sub-region (Marin, Napa, Solano, Sonoma counties). There is a projected annual gap of about 856 students in the Bay region and 80 students in the North Bay Sub-Region. There are seven (7) community colleges in the Bay Region issuing 84 awards on TOP 1005.00 Commercial Music, however there are none in the North Bay Sub-Region. There are four (4) other CTE educational institutions in the Bay Region issuing 70 awards on TOP 1005.00 Commercial Music, however there are 0 other CTE educational institutions in the North Bay Sub-Region. Solano CC would like to fill this much-needed gap in their North Bay Sub-Region. On April 15, 2022 - Teri Yumae (Solano FT Music Professor) contacted the coordinators at three local community colleges with similar programs: 1. Los Medanos College FDorritie@losmedanos.edu 2. Diablo Valley College nvasallo@dvc.edu 3. Ohlone College troberts@ohlone.edu Dr. Vasallo from DVC replied with: “Thanks for reaching out and consulting with me. I see there is a need in your region, since there are 0 other programs offering a similar degree. It is good that Solano is branding the program title "Sound Production" so it differs from any of the degree programs we offer at DVC. Good luck!”
