Catalog Description

The Stylist Certificate of Achievement offers an entry level curriculum of courses designed to meet the needs of students who are interested in the intersection of fashion, design, and personal image. Students who complete the certificate will have the entry level skills to understand and communicate current style and fashion to private clients or within the fashion industry. They will have the ability to place personal style in historical and current context, while using varied media to communicate those ideas. Upon successful completion of this program a student will be able to:1. Demonstrate creative problem-solving skills.2. Participate as a team member in a diverse work environment.3. Evaluate, organize, maintain, interpret and communicate information.4. Utilize social and other media to communicate ideas of personal style.5. Create a professional portfolio of work. Possible career options are Stylist, Image Consultant, and Merchandiser

Program Goal

The goal of the Stylist Certificate is to provide Career Technical Education opportunities to prepare students for work in the field, particularly image consultation and merchandising. This program is a specialized certificate related to the Apparel Design program. Previous Merchandizing Programs at West Valley were eliminated, but with the rise of online personalized styling jobs (such as StitchFix and Armoire), the need for such a program has returned

Academy Arts. Offers an AA in Fashion Styling. This is a full degree program and thus requiring more time and capital for training. Canada College. Offers an 18 unit Fashion Design Merchandizing certificate. Includes many of the same content as our certificate, without Studio Photography. NY Institute of Art and Design: Online only program (https://www.nyiad.edu/courses/personal-style). Offers virtual classes on styling and color theory, without studio photography experience. The Style Academy: Online only program (https://www.styleacademyintl.com/certificate-programs). Offers short virtual module-style classes on styling and color theory, without studio photography experience

NOTE: This is actually a West Valley College certificate and as such will go out for vote again under West Valley. The system is recording it as a Mission College certificate because Jackie Escajeda was kind enough to enter it on behalf of West Valley. BACCC is working on getting the title corrected in this portal.
