Catalog Description
This certificate program is designed to prepare students to apply graphic imaging and fine art
printing techniques in their preparation for careers in the field of visual communications. Students
are given creative, design and printmaking skills necessary to develop successful artworks in the
field of fine art, especially for areas of exhibiting, publishing and collecting of artworks. This
Printmaking Certificate offers students interested in building a career as practicing artists the
knowledge to produce finished artwork for the commercial art, fine art and book art markets. The
courses in the certificate offer standard printmaking methods whose knowledge is required in
applicable areas of the broad field of visual communication.
The certificate requires a total of 21 units and courses must be completed with a grade of C or
higher.

Program Goals and Objectives
The goal of this CTE Certificate is to provide students with the skills needed to enter the workforce as printmakers in the areas of fine art, commercial design, and printing. This certificate program is designed to prepare students to apply graphic imaging and fine art printing techniques in careers in the field of visual communications. Students are given creative, design and printing skills necessary to develop successful artworks in the field of fine art, offering students interested in building a career as practicing artists and printers the knowledge to design and produce finished artwork for the fine art, commercial and book art markets. The certificate will permit students to build skills and knowledge that meet industry standards and allow them to operate as independent printmakers or work as printers in print shops. The courses in the certificate offer standard printmaking methods which are required in applicable areas of the broad field of visual communication including fine art, graphic design, illustration, branding and merchandising.
The goal of a specialized CTE certificate in Printmaking to better serve and prepare our students for vocational careers in this field. Through the certificate path, students will learn how communicate through graphic images, they will learn design principles, color theory and aesthetics. Upon completion of the certificate, students will have gained the skills relevant to design and fine art printing skills in traditional and contemporary approaches to printmaking. Students will develop experience in a variety of printing methods including intaglio, relief, silkscreen, and photo. They will modify machine settings, inks, and printing pressures, use photo and cut stencils processes, inks, chemicals special to screen printing processes, light-sensitive polymer plates, polyester plates and paper and other printing substrates through hands-on courses.
Program Learning Outcomes:
1. Create original images and designs using the principals and elements of design.
2. Communicate successfully through graphic images and aesthetics.
3. Utilize fine art printing skill in a variety of traditional and contemporary approaches to printing.
4. Print in a variety of methods including intaglio, relief, silkscreen, and photo.
5. Modify machine settings, inks, and printing pressures, use photo and cut stencils processes, inks, chemicals special to screen printing processes, light-sensitive polymer plates, carborundum plates and paper and other printing substrates of plates through hands-on courses.
6. Demonstrate a familiarity with industry standards in fine art printmaking.
Students who successfully complete the program will be able to:
- Utilize standard printmaking methods to execute visual designs in visual communication areas including fine art, graphic design, illustration, branding and merchandising.
- Demonstrate skills needed to enter the workforce as printmakers in the areas of Fine Art and Commercial design and printing.
- Apply graphic imaging and fine art printing techniques
- Communicate emotions and ideas creatively
- Ability to work in groups/independently
- Work proficiently for accuracy and detail
- Accept/give criticism
- Operate various tools and equipment
- Work using esthetic judgment and sensitivity
- Make keen observations and appropriate decisions

The Fine Arts Department is in the process of creating vocational programs where we currently have none, and recognize that there is unmet demand for art based occupations in the region. The addition of a vocational Printmaking certificate addresses the labor market gap of 1336 annual openings in the LA area for this field by preparing our students for vocational careers in applied design and printing.
The courses in the certificate offer standard printmaking methods which are required in applicable areas of the broad field of visual communication including fine art, graphic design, illustration, branding and merchandising.

There is one Mt SAC Printmaking Certificate N0653, not CTE, activated Spring 2020 which will be discontinued when this Printmaking CTE Program is approved.
The current printmaking classes are also offered in Fine Arts Emphasis AA Degree A8983.
