Catalog Description

The Geomatics Certificate Program is designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the geospatial analysis sector.Students are trained in the concepts and theories of spatial data, spatial data acquisition and analysis, and the practical application of software in importing, rectifying, combining, and analyzing spatial data and the development of maps and reports.

Enrollment Completer Projections

We expect 15 to 20 completers annually.

Program Goal

The Geomatics program at CR will train people in the use and application of geospatial technology. The program is structured around courses that teach students how to directly acquire spatial data (FNR 52 Introduction to Surveying), the general concepts of spatial data (FNR 31 Intro to Geospatia lConcepts), and the input and analysis of remotely sensed data (FNR 33 Remote Sensing), spatial analysis (FNR 32 Intro to GIS), and drafting techniques (e.g.AutoCad) for local (fine scale) spatial data (DT 23 Engineering Design Graphics).

The program is designed to meet the needs of the surveying and forestry professions as well as related work in geospatial information which has spread to nearly every industry across the spectrum. The rising demand for geospatial awareness is only increasing with advancing technology such as UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) for acquiring fine-scale data.

There is a strong demand for both entry-level geospatial technicians in addition to other fields (e.g. forest technicians) that have a significant geospatial skill set requirement.

The Program Learning Outcomes for the Certificate are:

1.  Acquire, combine, and interpret spatial data from both local and remote sources.

2.  Apply critical analysis using common spatial analysis techniques and utilize technology to solve spatially-oriented problems.

3.  Develop relevant graphic displays, maps and reports.
