Catalog Description
The Associate in Science in Advanced Manufacturing Technology degree at Long Beach City College prepares students for transfer to a California State University, and prepares students for careers in aerospace, medical device, automotive aftermarket, and many other advanced manufacturing sectors where machine tool technologies are utilized. Students will learn a variety of valuable skills including print reading, shop math, and CNC machine tool programming. Students will learn inspection techniques using calipers, micrometers, indicators, thread-gaging, and automated measurement equipment, such as, digital height-gages, and indicators. Students will create machine programs using the latest software technologies on the latest CNC machine tool equipment and simulators. The program is designed to be complete in 2 to 3 semesters and will provide students with the technical skills needed to find employment or advancement in the field of advanced manufacturing/machine tool technology. Students will find jobs or apprenticeships as machine operator, CNC operator, machinist, CNC programmer, or inspector.

Program Goal
The Advanced Manufacturing Technology program at Long Beach City College provides students with the fundamentals of manufacturing through advanced manufacturing technology. The courses are designed for creating technical talent to meet tomorrow’s needs in a highly competitive and automated industrial workforce. Students will have the necessary technical skills, knowledge, and attitude to succeed in this rapidly changing automated manufacturing field. The program trains students in CNC machine tools using the latest machine tool technology and simulation software to enhance learning and to verify programs before machining. Students will learn how to machine basic to complex parts from stock to finished product according to industry standards. Additionally, students will be able to properly conduct in process inspection to meet the high-quality needs of industry. This program was designed in consultation with our industry advisory board and is in response to their requests for a program covering the skills needed by technicians in today’s manufacturing environment. These companies have adapted to changes in their industry by implementing numerous types of computer-controlled manufacturing equipment. Much of their existing workforce is of retirement age and comfortable with previous technology. These companies are looking for employees who can not only operate this equipment but are able to design and create the programming necessary for these machines to operate. This new program is in direct response to these industry needs and is in full alignment with those needs.
