The Industrial Automation Certificate/Degree program will prepare students with the knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA) to be employed as technicians in areas such as industrial agriculture and automation and heavy equipment maintenance and repair. Courses include Hydraulics, Pneumatics, Diesel Maintenance and Welding fundamentals. The Industrial Automation Technology program will also prepare students to troubleshoot, repair and install various industrial components and systems within agricultural automation, hydraulics and pneumatics.
The program anticipates 12 completers per year.
Program Proposal Attributes
- Certificate of Achievement: 16 or greater semester (or 24 or greater quarter) units (C)
- A.S. Degree (S)
Imperial Valley is one of the most important agriculture counties in California. Imperial Valley College, however, currently only teaches transfer level programs in the Ag department. There is no CTE program that prepares students to apply for jobs in the technical arena of agriculture such as ag mechanics. The Ag industry has been requesting the development of a new program that will teach the skills necessary to fill in this gap. Four of the proposed courses already exist within other disciplines. The new courses in hydraulics, pneumatics, and automation were identified by industry as essential skills for the industry. IVC received a SWP Priority Sector grant that provided the funding for program development and the purchase of the instructional equipment for hydraulics, pneumatics and automation.

Course Report
The Industrial Automation Technology (IAT) is a new program that addresses a labor gap in Imperial Valley for technicians that can perform maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, hydraulics, pneumatics, automation and other industrial operations. The program is consistent with the mission of the college by training students in demand occupations and with industry recognized skills. The general infrastructure for instructional services already exists in the new and modern electronics laboratory, welding and Diesel laboratory. Funding for equipment and support will be provided with a variety of resources including strong workforce funds, Perkins, Proposition 39, and general fund.

Imperial Valley College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with developing a program because 1) entry-level wages for most Industrial Automation Occupations are above the living wage for Imperial County and 2) a supply gap exists.
