Catalog Description

This Certificate of Achievement (COA) prepares students for entry-level employment and/or potential further study in the fields of fire protection and prevention. Students completing this degree will have a foundation for the fields of fire protection, prevention, or public education through the study of the organization and function of fire prevention and suppression techniques, fire behavior, combustible materials, extinguishing agents, hazardous and toxic material, fire command and fire management. The student will acquire knowledge in the design and operation of fire detection and alarm systems; fire protection features in building design and construction, wildland fire behavior and firefighting techniques; fire service organization, fire prevention, and theories of fire control. The Fire Technology program is based on the Uniform Fire Service Technology curriculum as approved by the State Board of Fire Services and the California Fire Chiefs Association and the National Fire Protection Association.


Program Learning Outcomes: 

Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to: 

1. Demonstrate proficiency in multi-faceted communication skills, assessment of the problem(s), interpretation of information and make judgments related to hazardous emergencies, medical emergencies, and fire (potential/actual) incidents. 

2. Demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of basic firefighter emergency responses as related to investigation and mitigation of the situation. 

3. Apply knowledge of building construction, fire protection systems, and fire prevention codes to affect safer occupancies and fire control. 

4. Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the principles of fire control through the utilization of personnel, equipment, extinguishing agents on the fire ground.



Justification: 

The fire service offers many career opportunities for graduates including positions in municipal fire departments, fire protection districts, and more than 250 California state fire protection agencies. There are also employment opportunities in forestry agencies, correctional institutions, military bases, and numerous federal agencies.

Program Goal:  

The Fire Technology Certificate of Achievement equips students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for entry‑level employment and continued study in fire protection and prevention. Through coursework aligned with state and national fire service standards, students develop competencies in fire behavior, suppression methods, hazardous materials, fire command, and fire management, as well as fire detection systems, building construction features, wildland fire behavior, and fire prevention and control theory. This preparation supports a wide range of career opportunities across municipal, state, federal, and specialized fire service agencies.

The Fire Technology Certificate of Achievement (COA) is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for entry-level careers in fire protection and prevention, while also supporting continued educational advancement in the field. Upon completion, students may pursue employment opportunities with municipal fire departments, fire protection districts, and the more than 250 fire protection agencies operating throughout California.
