The Teacher Certificate is designed to be the next step toward obtaining mid-level employment in the field of Early Childhood Education in a preschool or child care setting. The Teacher Certificate requires 24 core Child Development and Education units. This Certificate meets the Child Development education units California Title 5 requirements for the Child Development Teacher Permit. Applications and current full requirements can be obtained through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Office. Coursework in this certificate meets Title 22 requirements for working in a child care center working with preschool aged children 101216.1.

Program Goal
The purpose of this proposed Teacher Certificate is to assist MSJC students with a next step pathway to working with young children and completing the appropriate units to apply for the required permit for employment. Completion of the course work in the Teacher Certificate will ensure students are completing specific CDE coursework required to apply for the Child Development Teacher Permit authorization holders to provide service in the care, development and instruction of children in child care settings. The Teacher Permit authorizes employees to supervise an Associate Teacher, Assistant and an aide. The Teacher Certificate requires 24 core Child Development and Education units. This Certificate meets California Title 5 requirements for the Child Development Teacher Permit. Applications can be obtained through the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Office. Coursework in this certificate meets Title 22 requirements for working in a child care center working with preschool aged children 101216.1. The adoption of the California Quality Rating and Improvement System (July 2015) requires funded child care facilities to meet minimum requirements to ensure continued and increased funding. One criteria quality child care programs are rated on is the education level, coursework and current CA Child Development permit levels. Completion of the coursework in this Teacher Certificate meets minimum qualifications for students applying for the Teacher and supervisory level permit qualifying the classroom and program for state and federal funding.

This Certificate meets the Child Development education units California Title 5 requirements for the Child Development Teacher Permit. Some courses require students to observe children within licensed care settings. Some settings may require TB, proof of immunization and Criminal Record Clearance.
