Catalog Description

DVC's Music Industry Entrepreneurship degree begins with a well-rounded set of music technology and industry courses to provide the technical foundation to produce and present music. Students are required to complete electives in small business, entrepreneurship, and marketing. The degree also allows each student to steer their path towards their interest area(s) in music industry studies. Graduates of the Music Industry Entrepreneurship can move into all facets of the music and entertainment industries. Graduates may also transfer to 4-year universities, which can prepare them for successful careers in the music industry.

 

To earn a degree, students must complete each course used to meet a major requirement with a “C” grade or higher.

The proposed program in Music Industry Entrepreneurship is appropriate to the college mission, directly addressing the goals of career technical education programs.The development of the program is the result of a regional collaboration and has been approved by the program advisory committee.

The proposed program is supported by goals, objectives and strategies as described in the Contra Costa Community College District (CCCCD) Strategic Plan 2014-2019,specifically Goal 2:

Goal2: Strengthen current and create new partnerships.

·        Build pipelines that guide and prepare both K-12 students and the adult population for success in higher education and employment.

The program is appropriate to the objectives and conditions of higher education and community college education in California and conforms to statewide master planning goals to increase awards, align programs with industry demand, and meet the needs of students and the community.

The program learning outcomes include the following:

Students will be able to:

1. Describe the principles of copyrights, publishing, licensing, and royalties as they relate to the music industry.

2.
Describe the entrepreneurial process including how to develop successful business ideas and turn them into new entrepreneurial ventures.

3.
Create, arrange and produce recorded music projects.

4.
Practice team cooperation and creative thinking skills in performance of AV installations.
