Program Goal

The Associate Degree Nursing program, both the generic and LVN-RN tracks, have been approved by the Board of Registered Nursing since its inception in 2008 for the LVN-RN and 2010 for the generic. The program provides fifty to sixty needed registered nurses to the community on a yearly basis. The outcomes have been well above the state average. These consist of an attrition rate below 8%, NCLEX passing scores 93-100%, job placements 80-90%.

Students may complete the preparation for the major and general education requirements for the MiraCosta College ADN program or complete the program and transfer to a BSN program. Beginning in 2019 concurrent enrollment with partnering bachelor’s degree programs was offered to those interested students. A small percentage of students take advantage due to the rigorous content of the programs.  But students are able to achieve their bachelor’s degree in a short amount of time, usually within a year of graduation from the ADN program.

Typical employment sites of an ADN RN included: acute care hospitals, long term care, psychiatric support (in and out patients), chemical dependency, physicians offices, clinics, out patient facilities, public and private schools, prisons and jails, rehabilitation, outpatient surgery, community health centers, pharmaceutical research, hospice, home health, epidemiology and vaccine clinics

Program Requirements Narrative

California Licensed Vocational Nurses are eligible to apply for a one-year LVN-RN transition program, also known as the Registered Nursing (LVN-RN) Step-Up program in pursuit of the Associate Degree in Nursing. First-year nursing course work credit is granted with evidence of an active California LVN license in good standing and evidence of graduating from a program approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). MiraCosta College submitted the appropriate LMI from the COE. The COE recommends proceeding with developing a program because 1) a supply gap exists for these occupations; 2) their entry-level and median earnings are above the living wage; and 3) a high number of annual openings exist.
